1-2, 3-4, Forward & Reverse Accumulators

1-2, 3-4, FORWARD & REVERSE ACCUMULATORS 4T80-E TRANSAXLE

REMOVAL
1. Raise and support vehicle, then remove bottom pan and gasket, scavenger screens and lip seals as outlined.
2. Remove lower controls assembly as outlined.
3. Remove nine bolts (three from channel side).
4. Remove accumulator housing from channel plate, then remove check balls. Do not lose check balls.
5. Remove spring.
6. Remove accumulator piston top snap rings from housing side, then remove 1/2 and 3/4 accumulator assemblies.
7. Remove five accumulator housing cover bolts, then accumulator housing cover and gasket.
8. Remove forward accumulator assembly, then reverse accumulator assembly.

INSPECTION
1. Inspect accumulator pins for straightness by rolling on a flat surface.
2. Inspect accumulator seals for tearing or rollover and snap rings for overexpansion.
3. Inspect accumulator bores for scratches or nicks.
4. Replace gasket and inspect springs for cracking or damage.

INSTALLATION

^ Use a light coat of transmission fluid to lubricate all seals before installing accumulator assemblies.

1. Install forward accumulator assembly then reverse accumulator assembly.
2. Install new gasket, then accumulator housing cover.
3. Install accumulator housing cover bolts, then torque bolts to 71-98 inch lbs.
4. Install 1/2 accumulator pin. Retain with two snap rings.
5. Install 1/2 accumulator spring, piston and seal.
6. Install snap ring and spring.
7. Install 3/4 accumulator pin. Retain with two snap rings.
8. Install 3/4 accumulator spring, piston and seal.
9. Install snap ring.
10. Install check balls.
11. Install guide pins from tool No. J-39630-2, or equivalent, for accumulator housing, then install accumulator housing to lower channel plate.
12. Remove guide pins and install remaining bolts. Torque bolts to 98-115 inch lbs.
13. Install lower controls assembly as outlined.
14. Install bottom pan and gasket, scavenger screens and lip seals as outlined.
15. Add transaxle fluid as outlined.
16. Reset transaxle oil life indicator, if a complete fluid change was necessary, as outlined.
