COIL, SHAFT LOCK, TURN SIGNAL CANCELLING CAM, UPPER BEARING SPRING & SEAT, INNER RACE, TURN SIGNAL SWITCH, BUZZER SWITCH & LOCK CYLINDER SET

DISASSEMBLE
Front wheels of vehicle must be in straight ahead position and key must be in Lock position.
1. Remove screws from back of steering wheel.
2. Remove inflator module as outlined in Air Bag. Refer to Air Bags and Seat Belts/Air Bags(SRS).
3. Remove coil assembly plug from restraint module, then the horn contact from column.
4. Remove column as outlined in Steering Column
5. Remove hexagon locking nut, then the steering wheel, using puller tool No. J-1859-03, or equivalent.
6. Remove steering wheel shroud.
7. Remove lock screw from boss Home position on coil assembly, Fig. 47.
8. Remove coil assembly retaining ring.
9. Remove coil assembly off shaft end, allowing coil to hang freely.
10. Using compressor tool No. J-23653-A, or equivalent, depress shaft lock, then remove shaft lock retaining ring.
11. Remove shaft lock, then the turn signal cancelling cam.
12. Remove upper bearing spring, then the upper bearing seat.
13. Remove inner race, then place turn signal in Right Turn position.
14. Remove signal switch arm attaching screw, then the turn signal switch attaching screws.
15. Remove hazard knob, then position turn signal switch out of way. If removal of switch is necessary, remove retainer spring and wiring protector, then gently pull wire harness through gear shift lever bowl, column housing and lock housing cover.
16. If necessary, remove coil assembly as follows:
a. Disconnect POS assurance terminal, and, using terminal removal tool No. J-35689-A, or equivalent, disconnect wires from body connector assembly, Fig. 48.
b. Tape wire ends, then gently pull wire through gear shift lever bowl, column housing, and lock housing cover.
17. Remove key from cylinder lock.
18. Remove buzzer switch and clip, then install key in cylinder lock and place key in Lock position.
19. Remove lock retaining screw and lock cylinder set.

ASSEMBLE
Ensure all fasteners are securely seated before applying required torque.
1. Install lock cylinder set. Torque lock retaining screw to 26 lb in
2. Place key in Run position, then install buzzer switch and clip.
3. Route turn signal switch wiring harness through lock housing cover, column housing and gear shift lever bowl.
4. Route coil assembly wire through lock housing cover, column housing and gear shift lever bowl and allow coil to hang freely.
5. Install turn signal switch. Torque attaching screws to 26 lb in
6. Install wiring protector and retaining spring.
7. Install signal switch arm. Torque retaining screw to 18 lb in
8. Install hazard knob, then the inner race.
9. Install upper bearing seat, then the upper bearing spring.
10. Install turn signal cancelling cam, then the shaft lock.
11. Using compressor tool No. J-23653-A, or equivalent, to depress shaft lock, install shaft lock retaining ring, aligning to block tooth on shaft.
12. Ensure coil assembly hub is centered, Fig. 49. The coil assembly will become uncentered if the column is separated from the steering gear and is allowed to rotate, or the coil is removed from the column without first locking in position with locking screw.
13. Using horn tower on cancel cam inner ring and projections on outer ring for alignment, install coil assembly, then the coil assembly retaining ring. Move lock screw from Center Lock position to Home position on coil assembly.
14. Install steering wheel and steering wheel shroud, then the hexagon locking nut.
