Mid Column Components
DISASSEMBLE1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then remove steering column from vehicle as outlined under Steering Column.
2. Perform all disassembling steps outlined under Housing Cover.
3. Remove pivot pins using pivot pin removal tool No. J-21854-01, or equivalent. Install tilt lever.
4. Remove steering column housing assembly. Pull back on tilt lever and pull steering column housing assembly down and away from column.
5. Remove the following components to disassemble the steering column housing assembly:
a. Bearing assembly.
b. Wire abrasion shield.
c. Hex head screw.
d. Lock bolt spring.
e. Lock bolt.
f. Switch actuator rack and rack preload spring.
g. Driveshaft.
h. Switch actuator sector.
i. Release lever pin using lock shoe and release lever pin tool No. J-22635, or equivalent.
j. Shoe release lever.
k. Release lever spring.
l. Dowel pin using lock show and release lever pin tool No. J-22635, or equivalent.
m. Lock shoes and shoe springs.
6. Remove lower spring retainer.
7. Remove bearing and seal retainer.
8. Remove lower spring retainer.
9. Remove lower bearing spring and lower bearing seat.
10. Remove hex head bolts, then the adapter and bearing assembly.
11. Remove steering column shaft assembly.
12. Mark upper shaft assembly and lower steering shaft assembly to ensure proper assembly. Failure to assemble properly will cause steering wheel to be turned 180 °.
13. Disassemble steering column shaft assembly as follows:
a. Separate upper shaft assembly from lower steering shaft assembly. Tilt 90 ° to each other and disengage.
b. Separate centering sphere from upper shaft assembly by rotating sphere 90 ° and sliding out.
c. Remove joint preload spring from centering sphere.
14. Remove support screws, then remove column housing support assembly with dimmer switch rod from the steering column jacket.
15. Remove oval head recess screws and shift lever gate from support.
16. Remove shift tube retaining ring, then the two thrust washers and the lock plate.
17. Remove wave washer and two thrust washers, then the gearshift lever bowl assembly with the gearshift bowl shroud and shift tube assembly.
18. Remove shroud from bowl.
19. Remove shift lever spring, then the shift tube from the bowl. Use a press is necessary.
20. Remove hex nut and pan head screw securing PRNDL adjuster assembly.
21. Remove PRNDL adjuster bracket and the dimmer switch assembly.
22. Remove dimmer and ignition switch mounting stud.
23. Remove ignition switch assembly from ignition switch actuator assembly.
24. Remove cam retainer.
25. Remove pan head screw and dimmer and ignition switch mounting stud.
26. Remove cable assembly with ignition switch actuator assembly as follows:
a. Remove cable clip from upper location of steering column jacket assembly.
b. Remove cable mounting clip from solenoid bracket.
c. Remove ball joint socket from solenoid.
d. Remove ball joint spring.
27. Remove hex washer head screw securing interlock solenoid assembly and solenoid bracket to steering column jacket assembly.
28. Remove hex washer head screws securing solenoid bracket to steering column jacket assembly.
ASSEMBLE
1. Install solenoid bracket. Torque screws to 35 lb in
2. Install interlock solenoid assembly, then finger tighten hex washer head screw.
3. Connect terminal connector to interlock solenoid assembly.
4. Install cable assembly with ignition switch actuator assembly, as follows:
a. Install cable clip to upper location of jacket assembly.
b. Allow lower cable to hang free.
5. Install stud and bracket assembly. Torque screw and stud to 35 lb in
6. Install cable shift cam assembly and cam retainer. Torque retainer to 35 lb in
7. Assemble gate and screws to support. Torque screws to 33 lb in
8. Install dimmer switch rod to column housing support assembly.
9. Install support assembly and screws. Torque screws to 88 lb in
10. Install shift tube lever spring to gearshift lever bowl assembly.
11. Attach bowl to shift tube assembly using shift tube installation tool No. J-23073-1, or equivalent.
12. Install gearshift bowl shroud to bowl.
13. Install shift tube with bowl to steering column jacket assembly.
14. Install two thrust washers and wave washer. Lubricate wave washer with lithium grease.
15. Install lock plate and two thrust washers.
16. Install shift tube retaining ring, then connect steering shaft assembly to jacket assembly.
17. Install tilt lever, then the column housing assembly to the column, as follows:
a. Position column housing assembly and align switch actuator rack with pin on end of ignition switch actuator assembly.
b. Pull back on tilt lever, pushing column housing assembly onto column housing support assembly.
c. Release tilt lever to lock shoes and onto dowel pins.
d. Remove tilt lever.
18. Install pivot pins. Lubricate with lithium grease, then press pin until firmly seated.
19. Install adapter and bearing assembly. Lubricate with lithium grease.
20. Install hex head screws. Torque to 30 lb in
21. Install lower bearing seat and lower bearing spring. Press new lower spring retainer onto shaft to compress spring.
22. Measure distance from face of adapter and bearing assembly to lower spring retainer. Spring height must be 1.0 inch.
23. Install bearing and seal retainer, then the steering shaft seal.
24. Install seal retaining bushing and a new spring retainer.
25. Assemble remaining steering column components.
