DISASSEMBLE
1. Remove inflator module and steering wheel as outlined in Steering Column.
2. Remove coil assembly retaining ring, then the coil assembly.
3. Remove wave washer, then using compressor tool No. J-23653-C, or equivalent, to push down shaft lock, remove shaft lock retaining ring.
4. Remove shaft lock, then the turn signal cancelling cam assembly.
5. Remove upper bearing spring and upper bearing inner race seat.
6. Remove inner race, then move turn signal to Right Turn position (up).
7. Remove multi-function lever and hazard knob assembly.
8. Remove signal switch arm, then the turn signal switch screws.
9. Remove turn signal switch assembly as follows:
a. Disconnect turn signal switch connector from the bulkhead connector.
b. Remove wiring protector.
c. Gently pull wire harness through column.
10. Coil assembly will become uncentered if the steering column is separated from the steering gear and is allowed to rotate; or if the centering spring is pushed down, letting the hub rotate while the coil is removed. from the steering column.
11. Remove inflatable restraint coil assembly with wire harness from the coil assembly as follows:
a. Remove the coil terminal from the vehicle harness.
b. Remove yellow connector shroud from the black terminal connector.
c. Remove wiring protector.
d. Attach a length of mechanics wire to the coil terminal connector to aid in assembling.
e. Gently pull wire through column.
12. Remove key from pass key lock cylinder set, Fig. 67.
13. Remove buzzer switch assembly, then reinsert key in pass key in lock cylinder. Ensure key is in Lock position.
14. Remove lock retaining screw, then remove pass key lock cylinder and harness as follows:
a. Disconnect pivot switch connector from bulkhead connector and remove 13-way secondary lock.
b. Disconnect two terminals of pass key wire harness from cavities 12 and 13 of switch connector.
c. Remove wiring protector, then attach a piece of mechanics wire to terminal to aid in assembling.
d. Remove retaining clip from housing cover and gently pull wire harness through column.

ASSEMBLE
Route wire from pass key lock cylinder as shown in Fig. 68, and snap retaining clip into hole in housing. Failure to do so may result in component damage or malfunction of pass key lock cylinder.
1. Install pass key lock cylinder as follows:
a. Install wire terminal through column and snap retaining clip into hole in housing.
b. Connect two terminals of pass key wire harness to cavities 12 and 13 of pivot switch connector.
c. Attach 13-way secondary lock to switch connector.
d. Connect switch connector to bulkhead connector.
2. Install lock retaining screw. Torque to 22 lb in
3. Install key from pass key lock cylinder set. Install buzzer switch assembly.
4. Install key in pass key lock cylinder set. Ensure key is in Lock position.
5. Install turn signal switch assembly wire harness through steering column. Let switch hang freely and connect switch electrical connector to bulkhead connector.
6. Install coil assembly wire harness through column. Let coil hang freely, then connect yellow connector shroud to black terminal connector and connect to the vehicle harness.
7. Install turn signal switch assembly and screw. Torque screw to 30 lb in
8. Install signal switch arm and screws. Torque screws to 20 lb in
9. Install hazard knob assembly and multi-function lever.
10. Install inner race, upper bearing inner race seat and the upper bearing spring.
11. Install turn signal cancelling cam assembly. Lubricate with synthetic grease.
12. Install shaft lock.
13. Install new shaft lock retaining ring using compressor tool No. J-23653-C, or equivalent, to push down shaft lock. Ring must be firmly seated in groove on shaft.
14. Set steering shaft so block tooth on upper steering shaft is at the 12 o'clock position and the wheels are facing straight ahead. Set ignition switch to Lock position to ensure no damage occurs to the coil assembly.
15. Install wave washer.
16. SIR coil assembly wires must be kept tight with no slack while installing SIR coil assembly. Failure to do so may cause wires to be kinked near the shaft lock area and cut when the steering wheel is turned.
17. Ensure coil assembly is centered as follows:
a. Remove coil assembly.
b. Hold coil assembly with clear bottom up to see coil ribbon.
c. There are two different styles of coils. One rotates clockwise and the other rotates counterclockwise.
d. While holding coil assembly, depress spring lock to rotate hub in direction of arrow shown in Fig. 69, until is stops.
e. The coil ribbon should be wound up tight against the center hub.
f. Rotate coil hub in opposite direction approximately 2 1/2 turns. Release spring lock between locking tabs in front of arrow, Fig. 69.
18. Install coil assembly as follows:
a. Pull wire tight while positioning SIR coil to the steering shaft.
b. Align opening in coil with horn tower and locating bump between two tabs on housing cover, Fig. 70.
c. Seat coil assembly into steering column.
19. Install coil assembly retaining ring. Ring must be firmly seated in groove on shaft.
20. Gently pull lower coil assembly, turn signal, pass key, and pivot wires to remove any wire kinks that may be inside steering column assembly. Failure to do so may cause damage to wire harness.
21. Install wiring protector.
22. Install steering wheel.
