DRIVE AXLE SEAL REPLACE 4T80-E TRANSAXLERefer to image when removing drive axle.
1. Remove drive axle as follows:
a. Raise and support vehicle, then remove wheel and tire.
b. Install suitable seal protector on outer joint.
c. Remove hub nut. Insert drift or screwdriver into caliper and rotor to prevent rotor from turning.
d. Remove ball joint cotter pin and nut, then loosen joint using suitable ball joint separator. If removing right axle, turn wheel to left; if removing left axle, turn wheel to right.
e. Remove drive axle from hub using suitable front hub spindle remover, then move strut and knuckle rearward. Remove drive axle from transaxle with suitable prybar.
2. Use screwdriver to pry outer seal from transaxle, then use pliers to remove remaining housing of drive axle seal from transaxle.
3. Inspect transaxle case for damage after removing seal.
4. Clean drive axle seal mating surface on housing with crocus cloth.
5. Install drive axle seal using installed tool No. J-39051, or equivalent, and a hammer.
6. Install drive axle as follows:
a. If installing right drive axle, install suitable axle seal protector so it can be pulled out after drive axle is installed.
b. Drive axle into transaxle. Ensure drive axle snap ring is properly seated by grasping inner joint housing and pulling outboard. Do not pull on drive axle. Driveshaft will remain in place when snap ring is properly seated.
c. Drive axle into hub and bearing assembly.
d. Connect ball joint to knuckle.
^ Torque ball joint nut to 84 inch lbs., then tighten an additional 120° (two flats). When tightening nut, a minimum torque of 37 ft. lbs. must be obtained. If 37 ft. lbs. cannot be obtained, inspect for stripped threads. If threads are OK, replace ball joint and knuckle. If required, turn nut up to an additional 60° (one flat) to allow for installation of cotter pin.
e. Install hub nut and torque to 110 ft. lbs. Prevent drive axle from turning by inserting a screwdriver into rotor fins.
f. Remove seal protector. If a axle seal protector was installed, remove it by pulling inline with handle. Ensure it is completely removed and no pieces are left inside of transaxle.
g. Install wheel and tire, then lower vehicle.
