CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
The steering wheel speed sensor is a potentiometer that can continuously rotate with one wiper in the potentiometer portion of the sensor. The Variable Effort Steering (VES) steering wheel speed sensor is monitored for shorts to grounds, opens, or short to B+ in CKTs 1573, 1574 or 1575.
DTC WILL SET WHEN
This fault will set when the steering wheel speed input voltage stays at 4.740 volts or more for longer than.2 seconds with ignition to "RUN."
ACTION TAKEN
DTC 45 will set. The power steering system will revert to "normal operation.
DTC WILL CLEAR WHEN
DTC 45 will clear if fault goes away for 2 or more seconds.
DTC CHART TEST DESCRIPTION
Number(s) below refer to circled number(s) on the diagnostic chart.
1. This test checks for a defective steering wheel speed sensor.
2. This test checks for a short to B+ in CKT 1573 or CKT 1574.
3. This test checks for continuity in CKT 1575.
DIAGNOSTIC AIDS
A Tech 1 can be used to monitor the steering wheel speed sensor input voltage as the wheel is turned or road tested. An open in CKT 1575 can cause a DTC 45 to set, because the steering wheel speed sense will always be high.
