Engine: Service and Repair

ENGINE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION

This engine is equipped with a sequential multi-port fuel injection system. Fuel injector connectors must be positioned onto the correct fuel injectors or engine performance and exhaust emissions may be seriously affected. Fuel injector connectors are numbered to match the correct injector for that cylinder.

1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then recover R134a refrigerant. Refer to Heating and Air Conditioning.
2. Drain coolant into suitable container(s), then remove air cleaner resonator bracket nuts and resonator assembly by loosening clamp at air intake duct and sliding resonator assembly off studs.
3. Remove air intake duct.
4. Disconnect fuel lines at fuel rail.
5. On models equipped with mechanical fan, remove radiator fan upper shroud.
6. Remove fan blade clutch nuts and fan blade with clutch attached.
7. Remove fan pulley.
8. On all models, disconnect heater hoses from water pump.
9. Disconnect accelerator control cable at throttle body.
10. Disconnect radiator inlet and outlet hoses from water pump and engine, then coolant hose at throttle body.
11. Raise and support vehicle, then remove engine oil filter adapter hose assemblies, if equipped, and drain engine oil.
12. Remove warm up three-way catalytic converters and gaskets from exhaust manifolds.
13. Remove converter cover bolts/screws, then cover.
14. Remove converter bolts/screws.
15. Remove serpentine drive belt as outlined.
16. Remove air conditioning hose from compressor, then plug open ends of lines and fittings.
17. Disconnect transmission fluid cooler lines from engine clips.
18. On models equipped with mechanical fan, remove radiator fan lower shroud.
19. On all models, remove electric engine cooling fans.
20. Disconnect electrical connectors from starter motor, knock sensor, oxygen sensor, engine oil level switch and fuel pump switch/engine oil pressure gauge sensor.
21. Lower vehicle, then disconnect power steering inlet and outlet hoses at pump. Siphon fluid from reservoir to prevent excessive spillage.
22. Disconnect brake booster vacuum hose and generator wiring from generator.
23. Disconnect engine wiring harness connectors and ground straps, then raise and support vehicle.
24. Remove transmission-to-engine bolts/screws, then transmission filler tube bolt/screw at rear of right hand cylinder head.
25. Remove engine mount through-bolts/screws, then lower vehicle.
26. Disconnect engine wiring harness support at left front corner of intake manifold.
27. Install engine lifting device to boss at left front corner of intake manifold using a 3/8-16 NC standard thread bolt. Bolt should be long enough to thread into intake manifold at least one inch. Install other end of engine lifting device to fourth studded bolt on right side of intake manifold. Use a 3/8-16 NC nut to secure lifting device to studded bolt.
28. Remove engine.
29. Reverse procedure to install.
