Distributor: Service and Repair

DISTRIBUTOR REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
2. Disconnect Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor harness connector.
3. Remove air intake duct.
4. Remove serpentine drive belt.
5. Drain engine cooling system.
6. Disconnect three water pump hoses.

Water Pump Removal:

7. Remove water pump assembly.

Torsional Dampener Removal:

8. Remove crankshaft torsional damper.
9. Remove belt tensioner.
10. Remove spark plug secondary cables from distributor. Twist boot 1/2 turn and pull only on the boot to remove wire from distributor.
11. Disconnect four terminal Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connector from distributor.

Distributor Assembly Mounting:

12. Remove three distributor mounting bolts. Pull distributor forward until drive shaft disengages from engine. Mark the top surface of the shaft to denote location during reassembly.

INSTALL OR CONNECT

NOTE: Replace the O-rings on the coupling shaft or ignition system performance may be affected.

1. Install distributor.
A. Rotate distributor coupling until camshaft sprocket pin slot aligns with camshaft sprocket pin.
B. Slide distributor onto end of camshaft until fully seated on engine front cover.

NOTE: Do not attempt to fully seat distributor using bolts/screws. If distributor will not seat by hand, it is not properly aligned with camshaft. Rotate crankshaft until engine is at number 1 cylinder TDC (camshaft sprocket pin at the 9 o'clock position). Rotate the distributor coupling until the camshaft sprocket pin slot aligns with the distributor base timing mark. Install distributor using hand pressure to fully seat.

2. Start the three distributor bolts and finger tighten.
3. Tighten three distributor bolts to 11 Nm (98 lb in).
4. Connect four terminal PCM connector to distributor.
5. Connect spark plug cables to distributor.
6. Install belt tensioner.
7. Install crankshaft torsional damper to engine.
8. Connect coolant temperature sensor connector.
9. Install water pump.
10. Connect three water hoses to water pump.
11. Fill engine with coolant.

Serpentine Belt Routing:

12. Install serpentine drive belt.
13. Install air intake duct.
14. Connect IAT sensor connector.
15. Connect and tighten negative battery cable to 15 Nm (11 lb ft).
