Upper Column - Disassemble & Assemble

Fig. 68 Pass Key Wire Installation:

DISASSEMBLE
1. Remove column from vehicle as outlined under Steering Column.
2. Remove coil assembly retaining ring.
3. Remove inflatable restraint coil assembly, if required, as follows:
a. Remove wave washer, then the shaft lock retaining ring using lock plate compressor tool No. J-23635-C, or equivalent, to push down on shaft.
b. Remove shaft lock, then the turn signal cancelling cam assembly.
c. Remove upper bearing spring and the upper bearing race seat.
d. Remove inner race, then place turn signal lever to "RIGHT TURN" position (up).
e. Remove multi-function lever and hazard knob assembly.
f. Remove screws and the signal switch arm.
g. Remove turn signal switch mounting screws, then remove the turn signal switch assembly by removing the wiring protector and gently pulling wire harness through the column.
h. Remove wiring protector, then attach a piece of mechanics wire to terminal connector harness to ease assembling.
i. Gently pull wire through column and remove inflatable restraint coil assembly.
4. Remove key from pass key lock cylinder set.
5. Remove buzzer switch assembly, then reinsert key in pass key lock cylinder and move to Lock position.
6. Remove lock retaining screw, then remove pass key lock cylinder and harness as follows:
a. Disconnect cylinder harness connector from vehicle wire harness.
b. Remove wiring protector.
c. Attach a piece of mechanics wire to terminals to ease in assembling.
d. Gently pull wire harness through column.

ASSEMBLE
1. Install pass key lock cylinder as follows:
a. Route wire from pass key lock cylinder as shown in Fig. 68, and snap retaining clip into hole in housing. Failure to do so may result in component damage or malfunction of pass key lock cylinder.
b. Pull wire terminals through column and snap retaining clip into hole in housing.
c. Connect cylinder harness connector to vehicle wire harness.
2. Install lock retaining screw. Torque to 22 lb in
3. Remove key from pass key lock cylinder set, install buzzer switch assembly, then reinsert key in pass key lock cylinder set. Ensure key is in Lock position.
4. Insert signal switch assembly wire harness through steering column. Allow switch to hang freely, then connect switch connector to vehicle wire harness.
5. Pull coil assembly wire harness through column, Fig. 72. Allow coil to hang freely.
6. Install turn signal switch assembly and mounting screws. Torque mounting screws to 30 lb in
7. Install signal switch arm and screws. Torque screws to 20 lb in
8. Install hazard knob assembly and multi-function lever.
9. Install inner race, upper bearing inner race seat and upper bearing spring.
10. Install turn signal cancelling cam assembly. Lubricate with synthetic grease.
11. Install shaft lock, then the new shaft lock retaining ring using lock plate compressor tool No. J-23653-C, or equivalent, to push down shaft lock. Retaining ring must be firmly seated in groove on shaft.
12. Set steering shaft so block tooth on upper steering shaft is at the 12 o'clock position and the wheels are straight ahead, then set ignition switch to Lock position, to ensure no damage to coil assembly.
13. Install wave washer.
14. Coil assembly will become uncentered if the steering column is separated from the steering gear and is allowed to rotate, or if the centering spring is pushed down, allowing hub to rotate while coil is removed from column. If this occurs, center coil assembly by referring to Fig. 69, and performing the following:
a. Ensure wheels are pointing straight ahead.
b. Remove coil assembly.
c. Hold coil assembly with clear bottom up to see coil ribbon.
d. There are two different styles of coils, one rotates clockwise, the other rotates counterclockwise.
e. While holding coil assembly, depress spring lock to rotate hub in direction of arrow, Fig. 69, until it stops.
f. Coil ribbon should be wound up tightly against center hub.
g. Rotate coil hub in opposite direction approximately 2 1/2 turns. Release spring lock between locking tabs in front of arrow.
15. If a new coil assembly is installed, assemble pre-centered coil assembly to steering column. Remove centering tab and dispose.
16. SIR coil assembly wire must be kept tight with no slack while installing the coil assembly. failure to do so may cause wire to be kinked near shaft lock area and cut when the steering wheel is turned.
17. Ensure coil assembly is centered.
18. Install coil assembly as follows:
a. Pull wire tight while positioning air bag coil to steering shaft.
b. Align opening in coil with horn tower and locating bump between two tabs on housing cover, Fig. 70.
c. Seat coil assembly into steering column.
19. Install coil assembly retaining ring. Ring must be firmly seated in groove on shaft.
20. Gently pull lower coil assembly, turn signal and pass key wires to remove any wire kinks that may be inside steering column assembly. Failure to do so may cause damage to wire harness.
21. Install wiring protector.
