Subject:
Clunk Noise from Engine Compartment When Cruise Control is Disengaged
with Brake Pedal (Recalibrate Cruise Control)
Models:
1997 Cadillac Catera
Condition
Some owners may comment about a clunk noise heard from the engine compartment area when the cruise control is disengaged with the brake pedal. This sound may not be heard when the cruise control is disengaged using the off switch on the turn signal lever.
Cause
The clunk noise may be caused by the accelerator linkage closing too quickly against the throttle stop when the cruise control is disengaged with the brake pedal.
Correction
The cruise control can be recalibrated using the Tech 2 to eliminate this condition. The new calibration is available on Techline CD # 5, released in March, 1997. Cruise control diagnostic and programming functions can be found in the Body menu on the Tech 2. After entering the cruise control window, select "F4-Programming" and follow the instructions on the screen. However, when the Tech 2 instructs to "See Service Manual Before Programming", press the "Continue" button and follow the additional instructions since there is no information in the Camera Service Manual on programming the cruise control module.
