Rotor Surface Condition

In manufacturing of the rotor, braking surface finish is held to a specified tolerance range. Control of the rotor surface finish is necessary to avoid pulls and erratic performance, to ensure brake effectiveness, and to extend lining life. Rotors should not exhibit discoloration due to overheating or excessive glazing. If these conditions are encountered, resurface the rotor. Refer to Refinishing Brake Rotors. The braking surface should also be inspected for scoring. Light scoring of the rotor surfaces not exceeding a depth of approximately 1.2 mm (0.050 inch), which may result from normal use, is not detrimental to brake operation. Rotors which exhibit light scoring need not be refinished in most cases.
