Piston Pin: Service and Repair
TOOL REQUIRED^ J 38637 Piston Pin Retaining Ring Installer
REMOVAL
1. Using a small screwdriver, pry out the piston pin retainers by using the removal access notch in the side of the piston.
CAUTION: Be careful not to nick or gouge the piston or the retaining ring groove with the screwdriver if you plan to reuse the piston.
2. Slide the piston pin out of the piston. The piston will disconnect from the connecting rod.
INSTALLATION
1. Properly orient the piston on the connecting rod as follows:
^ The locating mark (4) cast into the underside of the piston should point towards the front of the engine.
^ The locating notch (3) on the connecting rod cap should be pointing towards the rear of the engine on odd-numbered cylinders and towards the front of the engine on even-numbered cylinders.
2. Align the piston pin bore with the connecting rod pin bore.
3. Slide the piston pin into the piston and the connecting rod.
4. Install the piston pin retainers using the Piston Pin Retaining Ring Installer.
5. Repeat these procedures for the remaining pistons.
