General Service Precautions
CAUTION: When performing service on or around SIR components or SIR wiring, follow the procedures listed to temporarily disable the SIR system. Failure to follow procedures could result in possible air bag deployment, personal injury or otherwise unneeded SIR system repairs. The inflatable restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM) maintains a reserve energy supply. When the vehicle power is insufficient to cause deployment of the frontal air bags, the reserve energy supply provides the deployment power. Deployment power is available for as much as 10 seconds after disconnecting the vehicle power by any of the following methods:
^ You turn off the ignition switch.
^ You remove the fuse that provides power to the inflatable restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM).
^ You disconnect the vehicle battery from the vehicle electrical system.
Disconnecting the DERM inflator module from the deployment loop allows you to begin service immediately without waiting for the time period to expire. Refer to Air Bag(s) Arming and Disarming.
