3. Install the vehicle Speed Sensor.
4. Install the park/neutral position switch and the manual shaft linkage.
- Tighten the park/neutral position switch bolts to 12 Nm (106 inch lbs.).
- Tighten the manual shaft nut to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).
NOTICE: Always use the correct fastener in the correct location. When you replace a fastener, use ONLY the exact part number for that application. The manufacturer will call out those fasteners that require a replacement after removal. The manufacturer will also call out the fasteners that require thread lockers or thread sealant. UNLESS OTHERWISE SPECIFIED, do not use supplemental coatings (paints, greases, or other corrosion inhibitors) on threaded fasteners or fastener joint interfaces. Generally, such coatings adversely affect the fastener tightening sequence and specifications. Following these instructions can help you avoid damage to parts and systems.
5. Raise the transmission on the J 8763-02
6. Install the engine to transmission bolts.
- Tighten the bolts to 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.).
7. Install the engine to transmission bracket and heat shield.
- Tighten the bolts to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).
8. Remove the J 8763-02.
9. Install the right transmission bracket, mount, and brace.
- Tighten the bolts to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).
10. Install the left transmission bracket and mount to the transmission.
- Tighten the bolts to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).
11. Install the fuel line bundle to the transmission.
12. Install the following electrical connectors:
- The transmission connectors.
- The VSS connector.
- The ground.
- The transmission harness in order to Install the transmission clip.
13. Raise the frame and/or lower the vehicle while locating the engine and transmission mount studs into the frame, harnesses at the frame, and the frame mount bolt holes to the underbody.
14. Install two front and two rear frame bolts finger tight in order to support the frame.
15. Remove the frame support fixture.
16. Support the rear of the frame with an adjustable jack stand.
17. Remove two rear frame bolts.
18. Lower the jack stand a few inches in order to gain access to the power steering gear.
19. Install the power steering pressure hose at the steering gear.
- Tighten the fitting to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.).
20. Install the power steering gear electrical connector and power steering gear heat shield:
- The ground.
- The transmission harness to the transmission clip.
21. Raise the jack stand.
22. install the six frame mount bolts in the following order:
- Left side #2 mount bolt into the body.
- Left side #1 mount bolt into the body.
- The remaining frame mount bolts.
23. Install the electrical harness to the front of the frame.
NOTICE: Do not rotate the steering wheel or move the position of the steering gear once the intermediate shaft is disconnected. This will uncenter the Inflatable Restraint coil in the steering column. If the Inflatable Restraint coil becomes uncentered, it maybe damaged during vehicle operation.
24. Install the steering intermediate shaft to the steering gear and install the clamp bolt.
- Tighten the bolts to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).
25. Install the left and right transmission mount nuts and the right engine mount nuts at the frame.
- Tighten the nuts to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).
26. Install the fuel filter bracket to the frame.
Important: Line up the flywheel and converter using the marks you made at disassembly.
27. Install the flywheel to converter bolts.
- Tighten the bolts to 60 Nm (44 ft. lbs.).
Important: When tightening the tie rod end nut, a minimum torque of 45 Nm (33 ft. lbs.) must be obtained. If 45 Nm (33 ft. lbs.) is not obtained, inspect for stripped threads. If the threads are satisfactory, replace the tie rod end and knuckle.
28. Tighten the tie rod end nut to 10 Nm (7.5 ft. lbs.) then an additional 1/3 turn (2 flats). After tightening the castellated nut to specification, align the slot in the nut to the cotter pin hole by tightening only. Do not loosen the nut for cotter pin installation. Tighten the tie rod end nut to 100 Nm (74 ft. lbs.) then an additional 1/3 turn (2 flats).
29. Install the torque converter cover.
- Tighten the bolts to 12 Nm (106 inch lbs.).
30. Install the engine oil pan to transmission bracket.
- Tighten the bolts to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).
31. Install the ABS modulator to the bracket.
32. Install the A/C splash shield at the frame.
33. Install both drive axles into the transmission.
34. Install both drive axles into the hubs and both drive axle nuts.
- Tighten the nuts to 145 Nm (110 ft. lbs.).
Important: When tightening the nut, a minimum torque of 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.) must be obtained. If 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.) is not obtained, inspect for stripped threads. If threads are satisfactory, replace the ball joint and knuckle. If required, turn the nut up to an additional 60° to allow for installation of the cotter pin.
35. Install both lower ball joints into the steering knuckles and both ball joint nuts and cotter pins.
