Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

Commercial Chassis

Adjustment of the parking brake system is necessary whenever the brake cable have been loosened, disconnected, or replaced. A need for parking brake cable adjustment is indicated if the hydraulic brake system operates with good reserve, but a fin parking brake feel cannot be achieved with less than one full stroke of the parking brake pedal.

ADJUST
1. Cycle the brake system.
a. With engine running apply and release brake pedal 30 to 35 times with normal Pedal force. Pause about 1 second between pedal applies.
b. Fully apply parking brake and release.
2. Check parking brake pedal assembly for fully release by turning ignition on and inspecting "BRAKE" warning indicator. Indicator should be off. If "BRAKE" warning indicator is on and parking brake appears to be fully released, operate the manual pedal release lever and pull downward on front parking brake cable to remove slack from pedal assembly.
3. Raise vehicle. Refer to General Information.
4. Tighten parking brake cable at adjuster until light parking brake induced brake drag can be felt when rotating each rear wheel by hand.
5. Fully apply parking brake again using 550 N (125 lb.) pedal force and release. Repeat this apply/release step five times.
6. Loosen adjuster to eliminate all parking brake induced brake drag.
7. Apply parking brake again, release and check for free wheel rotation.
8. Lower vehicle.
9. Check operation of parking brake. A firm pedal feel should be obtained by depressing the pedal less than one full stroke. If possible, place vehicle on a grade and check brake holding ability.
