Primary Camshaft Drive Chain Replacement
Removal Procedure^ Tools Required
- J39946 Crankshaft Rotation Socket
1. Remove the engine front cover. Refer to Engine Front Cover Replacement.
2. Remove the oil pump. Refer to Oil Pump Replacement.
3. Align the timing marks (1).
4. Remove the secondary camshaft drive chains. Refer to Secondary Camshaft Drive Chain Replacement.
5. Remove the primary drive chain tensioner. Refer to Camshaft Drive Chain Tensioner Replacement.
6. Remove the intermediate sprocket retaining bolt (3).
7. Remove the following as an assembly:
^ The primary drive chain (4).
^ The crankshaft sprocket.
^ The intermediate sprocket.
Important: The intermediate shaft should not be removed unless wear is evident.
8. Remove the intermediate sprocket shaft retaining bolts.
9. Remove the intermediate sprocket shaft (1).
10. Clean and inspect the camshaft intermediate drive shaft. Refer to Camshaft Intermediate Drive Shaft Clean and Inspect.
Installation Procedure
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
1. Install the intermediate sprocket shaft (1) and the retaining bolts.
Tighten the bolts to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).
2. Align the timing marks (1) of the intermediate and crankshaft sprockets. The marks should be aligned vertically in the installed position.
3. Install the primary timing chain on the drive sprockets.
4. Make sure that the number 1 piston is at top dead center (TDC) and the crankshaft keyway is approximately at the 1 o'clock position.
5. Use the J39946 to align the crankshaft key (1) with the drive sprocket.
6. Install the following as an assembly:
^ The primary drive chain (4).
^ The crankshaft sprocket.
^ The intermediate sprocket.
7. Install the intermediate sprocket retaining bolt (3).
Tighten the bolt to 60 Nm (44 ft. lbs.).
Important: DO NOT remove the pin holding the tensioner until the secondary timing chains are installed.
8. Install the primary drive chain tensioner (1). Refer to Camshaft Drive Chain Tensioner Replacement.
9. Install the secondary camshaft drive chains. Refer to Secondary Camshaft Drive Chain Replacement.
10. Remove the pin from the primary timing chain tensioner release lever.
11. Ensure the timing marks (1) are aligned vertically.
12. Install the oil pump. Refer to Oil Pump Replacement.
13. Install the engine front cover. Refer to Engine Front Cover Replacement.
