Subject:
Parking Brake Not Releasing Automatically/BRAKE Warning Lamp ON After Shifting from PARK (Replace Park Brake Lever Assembly)
Models:
2000-2002 Cadillac DeVille
Condition
Some customers may comment on one or more of the following conditions after setting the parking brake:
^ The BRAKE warning lamp on the instrument panel may remain illuminated after shifting the vehicle out of PARK.
^ The parking brake may not release automatically but can be released manually.
Cause
These conditions may be due to switch over-travel upon pedal return causing the park brake switch to be in the "on" position when it should be "off". Applying the parking brake repeatedly to turn the switch "off" may damage the switch and cause it to remain in the "off" position.
Correction
If the above conditions can not be corrected by using the normal strategy based diagnostics listed in the Service Manual, remove the existing park brake lever assembly and install the new assembly, P/N 25731070. Refer to Park Brake Pedal Replacement in the Park Brake sub-section of the Service Manual.
Important:
When replacing the park brake lever assembly in a 2000-2002 Cadillac DeVille, use ONLY P/N 25731070.
