Steering Column - Rubbing Noise

File In Section: 02 Steering

Bulletin No.: 02-02-35-003

Date: May, 2002

TECHNICAL

Subject:
Rubbing Noise From Steering Column
(Inspect Steering Column Intermediate Shaft Seal)

Models:
2000-2002 Cadillac DeVille

Condition

Some customers may comment on a rubbing noise coming from the lower part of the steering column.

Cause

This condition may be caused by the steering column intermediate shaft rubbing on the intermediate shaft seal at the base of the steering column.

Correction

Inspect the steering column intermediate shaft seal using the following procedure:

1. Remove the left instrument panel closeout/insulator panel. Refer to the Closeout/Insulator Panel Replacement-Left procedure in the Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console sub-section of the Service Manual (SI Document ID # 475660).

2. Make sure the top of the intermediate steering shaft seal is properly positioned on the black boot which is part of the steering column. If the seal is improperly positioned on this boot, it may be deformed and contact the steering column intermediate shaft causing the rubbing noise. Reposition the seal properly on the steering column boot, if necessary.

3. Inspect the instrument panel wiring harnesses for contact with the seal. The harness may push the seal into contact with the steering column intermediate shaft causing the rubbing noise. Reposition any wiring harnesses away from the seal, if required.

4. Inspect the intermediate steering shaft seal for any type of damage or rub through. If replacement is necessary, use P/N 25723408. Refer to the Seal Replacement - Intermediate Steering Shaft procedure in the Steering Wheel and Column sub-section of the Service Manual (SI Document ID # 823189).

5. If the intermediate steering shaft seal does not require replacement, install the instrument panel closeout/insulator panel. Refer to the Closeout/Insulator Panel Replacement-Left procedure in the Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console sub-section of the Service Manual (SI Document ID # 475660).
