Installation Procedure

TRANSMISSION REPLACEMENT
TOOLS REQUIRED:
^ J 41623-B Cooler Quick Connect Tool
^ J 41160 Transmission Jack Adapter
INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
NOTICE: Refer to Fastener Notice.
1. Install the transmission mount bracket and mounting bolts to the engine.
TIGHTEN
Bolts to 110 Nm (89 lb ft).
2. Install the transmission mount bracket (1) to the transmission.
3. Install the transmission mount bracket mounting bolts (3) and nut (2).
TIGHTEN
Bolts and nut to 50 Nm (37 lb ft).
4. Install the transaxle cooler pipe to the transaxle.
5. Attach the transaxle cooler pipe to the oil cooler pipe adaptor on the transaxle.
TIGHTEN
Transaxle cooler pipe to 35 Nm (26 lb ft).
IMPORTANT: Ensure clearance is maintained between the transaxle and the following:
- The brake pipes
- The secondary AIR pipe
- The power steering pressure hose
- The wiring harnesses
6. Carefully raise the transaxle to the engine in a tilted position in order to clear the starter nose cone.
7. Align the transaxle with the engine and position the transaxle onto the engine dowels. Install the engine to transaxle bolt (2).
TIGHTEN
Bolt to 75 Nm (55 lb ft).
8. Install the bolts securing the transaxle center brace to the transaxle.
TIGHTEN
Bolts to 50 Nm (37 lb ft).
9. Connect the vehicle speed sensor electrical connector.
10. Install the vehicle speed sensor heat shield.
11. Install the vehicle speed sensor heat shield retaining nuts.
TIGHTEN
Nuts to 50 Nm (37 lb ft).
12. Install the bolts securing the front transaxle brace to the transaxle.
TIGHTEN
Bolts to 50 Nm (37 lb ft).
13. Raise the transaxle and install the nut (1) securing the transaxle mount to the transaxle mount bracket.
TIGHTEN
Nut to 75 Nm (55 lb ft).
14. Remove the transmission jack and the J 41160.
IMPORTANT: Line up the flywheel and converter using the alignment marks made during disassembly.
15. Install the flywheel to converter bolts.
TIGHTEN
Bolts to 60 Nm (44 lb ft).
16. Install the torque converter cover assembly.
17. Install the engine to transaxle bracket lower bolt (1).
TIGHTEN
Bolt to 50 Nm (37 lb ft).
18. Install the right and left drive shafts (2) to the transaxle (1).
19. Install the 3 ground connections to the side of the transaxle
TIGHTEN
Bolts to 50 Nm (37 lb ft).
20. Connect the transaxle main electrical harness connector.
21. Install the left transaxle brace to the powertrain assembly.
22. Install the bolt securing the left transaxle brace to the transaxle.
TIGHTEN
Left transaxle brace bolt to 50 Nm (37 lb ft).
Left transaxle brace nut to 41 Nm (30 lb ft).
23. Install the front frame assembly to the vehicle.
24. Install the left front fascia extension.
25. Install the stabilizer shaft links.
26. Lower the vehicle.
27. Connect the lower transaxle oil cooler pipe to the transaxle.
TIGHTEN
Transaxle cooler pipe to 35 Nm (26 lb ft).
28. Push the upper transaxle oil cooler pipe into the radiator quick connect fitting until a click is heard.
29. Tug gently on the cooler pipe to ensure proper retention.
30. Slide the plastic cap over the quick connect fitting.
31. Install the upper transaxle oil cooler pipe retaining bolt to the fan shroud.
TIGHTEN
Pipe retaining bolt to 6 Nm (53 lb in).
32. Install the remaining transaxle to engine bolts (1).
TIGHTEN
Bolts to 75 Nm (55 lb ft).
33. Remove the engine support fixture.
34. Install the range selector cable bracket to the studs on the transaxle.
35. Install the heater pipe to the stud on the transaxle.
36. Install the nuts that retain the heater pipe and the range selector cable bracket to the transaxle.
TIGHTEN
Nuts to 25 Nm (18 lb ft).
37. Connect the range selector cable terminal to the transaxle range selector lever.
38. Install the Magnasteer wire to the retaining clip.
39. Connect the transaxle vent tube to the accelerator bracket.
40. Install the brake pipe retainers to the side rail.
41. Install the upper and lower air cleaner assemblies.
42. Install the upper filler panel (1).
43. Add DEXRON III transmission fluid as required.
44. Clear the transmission adaptive pressures (TAPS).
45. Measure the wheel alignment.
46. Road test the vehicle and check for transaxle leaks.
