Removal Procedure
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Raise and support the vehicle.
3. Remove the lower oil pan.
4. Remove the engine mount lower nuts from the frame bracket. Note the orientation of the alignment tab (1).
5. Remove the engine splash shield bolts.
6. Remove the engine splash shield.
7. Remove the A/C compressor hose and ground strap bolt from the front of the upper oil pan.
8. Remove the catalytic converter hanger bolts (1) from the hanger bracket (2).
9. Remove the catalytic converter nuts from the exhaust manifold.
10. Lower the catalytic converters and secure with mechanic wire.
11. Remove the 2 idler arm bolts from the frame and lower the relay rod out of the way.
12. Lower the vehicle.
Notice: When raising the engine, use care so as not to damage surrounding components and/or attachments to the engine.
13. Use the J 28467-A, the J 28467-450 and the J 36857 to support and raise the engine.
14. Raise the vehicle.
15. Install jack stands to the engine frame assembly.
16. Remove the 4 rear frame bolts.
17. Loosen the 2 front frame bolts. DO NOT remove.
18. Using the jack stands lower the engine frame assembly.
19. Remove the 4 transmission bolts from the upper oil pan.
20. Remove all but the 4 corner upper oil pan bolts.
21. Loosen the 4 corner upper oil pan bolts.
Notice: Use care so as not to damage the aluminum mating surfaces of the upper oil pan.
Important: Remove the upper oil pan toward the front of the vehicle. If the oil pan cannot be removed from the block, use a soft faced hammer and tap on the upper oil pan.
22. Remove the 4 remaining bolts from the upper oil pan.
23. Remove the rubber seal (1).
24. Clean the upper oil pan mating surfaces.
Important: Make sure that no silicone residues or particles remain in the engine block or the upper oil pan.
25. Clean oil pan in washing unit, dry with compressed air.
Installation Procedure
Important:
^ Sealing surfaces need to be clean and dry.
^ Use care when applying sealant not to carry over sealant to the bolt holes.
^ Installation of the upper oil pan must be carried out within 5 to 10 minutes of applying the sealant.
1. Apply a 3 mm (0.12 inch) bead of silicone sealing compound, GM P/N 12346286 or equivalent, around the upper oil pan.
2. Apply a bead of sealant to the joints of the rear crankshaft bearing cap.
3. Carefully install the upper oil pan through the front of the vehicle.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
4. Install the upper oil pan bolts.
Tighten the upper oil pan bolts to 15 Nm (11 ft. lbs.).
5. Using the jack stands, raise the engine frame assembly to the original position.
6. Install the 4 rear frame bolts.
^ Tighten the front bolts to 65 Nm (48 ft. lbs.).
^ Tighten the rear bolts to 150 Nm (111 ft. lbs.).
7. Remove the jack stands from the engine frame assembly.
8. Lower the vehicle.
9. Using the engine support fixture, lower the engine into place. Ensure the motor mounts are properly aligned.
10. Remove the engine support fixture.
11. Raise the vehicle.
12. Install the 4 transmission bolts to the upper oil pan.
Tighten the upper oil pan bolts to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
13. Raise the relay rod and install the bolts to the right idler arm.
Tighten the right idler arm bolts to 60 Nm (44 ft. lbs.).
14. Raise the catalytic converters into place and install the catalytic converter nuts.
Evenly tighten the catalytic converter nuts to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).
15. Install the catalytic converter bolts (1) into the hangers (2).
Tighten the catalytic converter bolts to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).
16. Install the A/C compressor hose strap bolt to the upper oil pan.
Tighten the A/C compressor hose strap bolt to 8 Nm (71 inch lbs.).
17. Install the engine mount lower nuts. Note the orientation of the locator tab (1).
Tighten the engine mount lower nuts to 55 Nm (41 ft. lbs.).
18. Install the lower oil pan.
19. Install the splash shield.
20. Install the splash shield bolts.
Tighten the engine splash shield bolts to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).
21. Lower the vehicle.
22. Fill the crankcase with engine oil.
23. Inspect for leaks.
