TECHNICAL
Subject:
Squeak Noise in Steering Column
(Lubricate Lower Column Bearing)
Models:
1997-2001 Cadillac Catera
Condition
Some customers may comment on a squeak noise coming from the steering column while turning the steering wheel. The noise is more noticeable with cold ambient temperatures.
Cause
This condition may be caused by a lack of lubricant at the lower steering column bearing. This lack of lubricant causes the rubber lower bearing cage to become misaligned and allows the bearing cage to rub on the shaft.
Correction
Disassemble the steering column and remove the lower steering column bearing. Thoroughly clean the old lubricant from the lower bearing. Use a Scotchbrite(R) pad, or equivalent, to restore the bearing contact surface on the steering column shaft. Lubricate the lower bearing thoroughly using Dielectric Silicone Grease, P/N 12345579 (in Canada, use P/N 10953481), and reassemble the column.
Use the following service procedure and P/N listed below.
