4. Remove the propeller shaft coupling from the drive flange.

5. Remove the access hole plugs from the following components:
^ The oil pan (1)
^ The bell housing (2)

6. Mark the flywheel and the torque converter for ease of assembly.
7. Remove the 6 flywheel to torque converter bolts.

8. Remove the transmission oil cooler inlet (1) and outlet (2) pipes from the center oil cooler pipes.
^ Squeeze the clamps
^ Slide the clamp away from the hose connection
^ Remove the hoses from the pipes

9. Disconnect the oxygen sensor connectors (1).
10. Remove the exhaust catalytic converters.

11. Remove the 4 transmission housing to engine oil pan bolts (1).
12. Install the transmission support.

13. Remove the 2 crossmember to transmission mount nuts (1).
14. Remove the 2 crossmember to body bolts (2).
15. Remove the crossmember.
16. Lower the transmission to provide access to the upper transmission housing to engine bolts.
17. Remove the transmission vent hose.
18. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the following components:
^ The transmission control selector switch
^ The transmission adapter case
^ The transmission main case
^ The transmission speed sensor
^ The speed sensor wire harness clip from the housing
19. Support the front of the engine.
20. Remove the 4 upper transmission housing to engine bolts.
21. Remove the 2 engine to transmission housing bolts.
22. Remove the transmission.

23. Clean threaded holes in engine block using a 12 x 1.75 mm tap.

Installation Procedure

Notice: Automatic transmission oil cooler flushing must be performed when an automatic transmission is removed for service. The flushing procedure should be performed after the installation of the overhauled or replacement transmission. Failure to flush the system may cause damage to the system and its components.

1. Flush the transmission oil cooler.
2. Install the transmission.
3. Apply thread locking compound P/N 12345382 to the transmission housing to engine bolt threads.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

4. Install the transmission housing to engine bolts.
^ Tighten the transmission housing to engine block bolts to 60 Nm (44 ft. lbs.).
5. Test the torque converter for freedom of rotation.
^ The torque converter must rotate freely.
^ If not, the torque converter is not fully seated in the pump drive gear. Perform the following:
5.1. Remove the transmission.
5.2. Inspect the transmission pump gears for damage, repair as needed.
5.3. Install the torque converter. The torque converter must be fully seated.
5.4. Install the transmission.
6. Remove the support from the front of the engine.
7. Connect the electrical connectors at the following locations:
^ The transmission control selector switch
^ The transmission adapter case
^ The transmission main case
^ The transmission speed sensor
^ Attach the harness clip to the housing
8. Install the transmission vent hose
9. Raise the transmission into position.
10. Install the crossmember.
11. Install the 2 crossmember to body bolts (2).
^ Tighten the crossmember to body bolts to 45 Nm (33 ft. lbs.).
12. Install the 2 crossmember to transmission mount nuts (1).
^ Tighten the transmission mount nuts to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).
13. Remove the transmission support.
14. Apply thread locking compound P/N 12345382 to the transmission housing to engine oil pan bolts.

15. Install the transmission housing to engine oil pan bolts (1).
^ Tighten the transmission housing to engine oil pan bolts to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
16. Install the exhaust catalytic converters.

17. Connect the oxygen sensor connectors (1).

18. Install the transmission oil cooler inlet (1) and outlet (2) pipes.
^ Connect the hoses on the pipes.
^ Squeeze the clamps.
^ Slide the clamps toward the hose connection.

Important: Install and only finger tighten all 6 flywheel to torque converter bolts.

19. Install the new flywheel to torque converter bolts:
^ Remove the retaining compound from the first three threads of the new flywheel to torque converter bolts.
^ Observe the marks made during disassembly and align in original position.
^ Ensure weld nuts on torque converter are flush with flywheel.
^ Tighten the torque converter bolts.
^ Tighten the flywheel to torque converter bolts to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.).

20. Install the access hole plugs on the following components:
^ The transmission oil pan (1)
^ The bell housing (2)

21. Install the propeller shaft coupling to the drive flange.
22. Tighten the propeller shaft coupling bolts.
^ Tighten the propeller shaft coupling bolts to 95 Nm (70 ft. lbs.).
23. Install the shift linkage.
24. Adjust the shift linkage.
25. Fill the transmission with DEXRON III
26. Lower the vehicle.
