Drive Pinion Disassemble

^ Tools Required
- J 22912-O1 Split Plate Bearing Puller
- J 42176 Driver Handle
- J 42154 Pinion Bearing Race Remover

Important: The ring gear and drive pinion gear may require replacement if the rear axle was operated for an extended period with loose differential drive pinion gear bearings.

1. Inspect the differential drive pinion gear bearing preload.
2. Remove the differential drive pinion flange.
3. Place a block of wood (3) or otherwise support the drive pinion gear as it is driven from the differential housing.
4. Use a soft faced dead blow hammer to drive the pinion gear (1) from the differential housing (2).

5. Remove the differential drive pinion gear bearing spacer (1) from the differential drive pinion gear (2).
6. Remove the differential pinion gear inner bearing from the differential drive pinion gear.

7. Remove the differential drive pinion seal from the rear axle housing.
8. Perform the following steps in order to remove the inner bearing:
8.1. Mount the J42154 on the J42176.
8.2. Position the J 42154 firmly to one side of the bearing race.
8.3. Use a hammer or press to drive the differential drive pinion gear inner bearing race from the differential housing while rotating the tool around the edge of the race.

9. Remove the differential drive pinion gear shim (1) from the differential housing (2).
10. Use the J22912-01 and a press in order to separate the drive pinion gear inner bearing from the drive pinion gear.

11. Remove the drive pinion gear outer bearing from the housing.
12. Use the J 42154 and the J 42176 with a dead blow hammer or a press in order to remove the bearing race.
