Axle Shaft Assembly: Service and Repair
Rear Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement^ Tools Required
- J 42066 Hub Holding Tool
- J 42071 Drive Axle Separator
Removal Procedure
1. Place the transmission in neutral.
2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
3. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
4. Install the J 42066 to the wheel hub flange and secure with wheel bolts.
5. Remove the wheel drive shaft flange bolts (1) while holding the J 42066 stationary.
6. Separate the wheel drive shaft from the wheel bearing hub flange.
Important: Ensure that the beveled side of the tool is against the differential in order to avoid damage to the wheel speed sensor ring.
7. Use the J 42071 to separate the wheel drive shaft from the differential.
8. Remove the wheel drive shaft from the vehicle.
9. Clean the wheel drive shaft splines.
10. Clean the sealing surfaces.
Installation Procedure
1. Lubricate the wheel drive shaft splines with differential lubricant.
2. Lubricate the sealing surfaces with differential lubricant.
Important: Use only enough force necessary to seat the wheel drive shaft into the differential.
3. Use a soft faced mallet to drive the wheel driveshaft into the differential.
4. Install the outer end of the wheel drive shaft to the wheel bearing hub flange.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
5. Use J 42066 while installing the wheel drive shaft flange bolts to the wheel drive shaft flange.
^ Tighten the wheel drive shaft flange bolts to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.) then an additional 67 degrees.
6. Remove the J 42066 from the wheel hub flange.
7. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
8. Lower the vehicle.
