Service Procedure

The following service procedure describes how to install a retainer in BOTH the driver and front passenger seat belt buckle pretensioners.

1. Remove the rear seat cushion and remove the SIR fuse.

2. Fully recline the front passenger seat back (1).

3. Open the hinged cover at the rear of the front passenger seat belt buckle pretensioner cover (3), pull the cover forward and remove.

4. Raise the front of the front passenger seat cushion to the full up position to improve access to the pretensioner cylinder (2).

Important
The retainer installed in the next step has tangs (1) on it so that it CANNOT be installed backwards. For proper operation in a deployment condition, the retainer must be fully inserted into the pretensioner cylinder. The above illustration includes cut-away views of the cylinder to assist in understanding how the retainer is installed.

5. Install the retainer in the cylinder (2) as shown above.

a. Push the retainer into the cylinder until it stops. When properly installed, a click type sound will be heard and a small part of the retainer will protrude from the end of the cylinder. If the click type sound is NOT heard, the retainer may not be fully inserted.

b. Using your fingers, attempt to pull the retainer out of the pretensioner. When the retainer is fully seated, it cannot be pulled out.

c. Push the retainer back into the pretensioner cylinder until it stops.

6. Lower the front of the front passenger seat cushion.

7. Reinstall the cover over the pretensioner and close the rear cover.

8. Return the front passenger seat back to the normal position.

9. Repeat steps 2-8 on the driver's seat belt buckle pretensioner.

10. Install the SIR fuse and reinstall the rear seat cushion.

11. Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position and verify that the AIR BAG indicator light flashes 7 times and goes off.

12. Install the GM Recall Identification Label.
