Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing & Jacket - Disassemble

- Tools Required
- J 21854-01 Pivot Pin Remover





1. Remove the lock module assembly. Refer to Electronic Column Lock Module - Disassemble - Off Vehicle.
2. Remove the wire harness assembly only. Refer to Wire Harness Assembly - Disassemble - Off Vehicle.
3. Remove the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly only. Refer to Turn Signal and Multifunction Switch Assembly - Disassemble - Off Vehicle.
4. Remove the linear shift assembly, the automatic transmission shift lock control assembly and the shift lever only. Refer to Linear Shift Assembly - Disassemble - Off Vehicle.
5. Remove the tilt spring only. Refer to Tilt Spring - Disassemble - Off Vehicle.
6. Check for accident damage.
7. If a dual triangle sensor assembly is present perform the following steps. If not proceed to the next step. Remove the following parts from the steering column support assembly:
7.1. The boot (1)
7.2. The steering shaft seal (2)
7.3. The sensor retainer (3)
7.4. The sensor (4)
7.5. The retaining ring (5)





8. Remove the following parts from the steering column support assembly:
8.1. The boot (1)
8.2. The steering shaft seal (2)
8.3. The sensor retainer (3)
8.4. The retaining ring (4)
8. 5. The boot seal (5)





9. Remove the 2 pivot pins (1) from the steering column support assembly using J 21854-01.





10. Remove the tilt head assembly (1) from the steering column support assembly (2) with the steering shaft (3) still attached.





11. Remove the tilt head assembly (1) from the steering shaft assembly (2).

Important: Mark the race and upper shaft (1) and the lower steering shaft (2) to ensure proper assembly. Failure to assemble properly will cause the steering wheel to be turned 180 degrees.





12. Tilt the upper shaft assembly 90 degrees to the steering shaft assembly and disengage.
