Final Drive Assembly Replacement

Removal Procedure





1. Remove the case extension.
2. Remove the heat shield





3. Remove the right transaxle to engine bracket.





4. Remove the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) (130) electrical connector





5. Remove the case extension bolts (127, 128, 129).
6. Remove the seal (126).
7. Remove the roller thrust bearing (132) and the selective washer (133).





8. Remove the scavenge tube bolt.
9. Remove the scavenge tube by prying on the differential.
10. Remove the scavenge tube seal.





11. Rotate the manual shaft (16) counter-clockwise in order to place the transaxle in Park (P) and prevent the differential from rotating.





12. Remove the four bolts (119) from the differential housing to transaxle case.
13. Remove the differential carrier.





14. Push on the output shaft in order to expose the left side differential gear snap ring. Remove the left side differential gear to output shaft snap ring (56).
15. Remove the differential side gear (118) and thrust washer (117).





16. Remove the final drive carrier (100) and the thrust bearing.
17. Remove the final drive sun gear (121).

Installation Procedure





1. Install the sun gear (121) with the bushing and the seal side facing differential.
2. Install the final drive carrier (100). Turn the unit until it meshes with the sun gear and the internal gear teeth.





3. Install the left thrush washer.
4. Install the left differential side gear.
5. Install the snap ring.





6. Use the manual shaft to place the transaxle in park.
This will lock up the final drive unit. The actuator rod will move up.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

7. Install the differential housing and the four bolts (119). Hand tighten, using a star pattern.
^ Tighten the bolts to 76 Nm (56 ft. lbs.).





8. Install the scavenger tube seal into the case.
9. Tap the scavenger tube in lightly using a plastic hammer. The rib on the pipe will remain exposed. This is a normal condition.
10. Install the scavenger tube bolt.
^ Tighten the bolt to 13 Nm (116 inch lbs.).





11. Install the selective washer (133) and the thrust roller bearing (132) onto the differential output shaft.
12. Insert the case extension seal (126) into the case extension.
13. Install the case extension (134) Onto the case.
14. Install the bolts (128 and 129) and the stud (127). Install the stud in the 11 o'clock position using the star pattern.
^ Tighten the bolts and the stud to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.).
15. Check the final drive end play.
16. Install the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) electrical connector and the ground wire to the case.





17. Install the right transaxle to engine bracket.





18. Install the heat shield.
19. Install the right drive axle into the transaxle.
20. Check the Fluid level.
