Steering Column

- J 42640 Steering Column Lock Pin

Removal Procedure

Caution: Refer to Slit Caution in Service Precautions.





1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System in Restraint Systems.
2. Insert the J 42640 into the steering column access hole in order to lock the steering column.





3. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
4. Remove the intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt.
5. Remove the intermediate shaft from the power steering gear.
6. Lower the vehicle.





7. Remove the knee bolster (1). Refer to Knee Bolster Replacement - Left in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Warning Indicators.
8. Remove the steering wheel. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement.
9. Disconnect the steering column electrical connectors.
10. Disconnect the transmission shift cable from the linear shift assembly.





11. Remove the clip from the transmission shift cable.





12. Remove the transmission shift cable (2). Squeeze the tabs (1) together and pull the transmission shift cable from the bracket.





13. Remove the steering column mounting nuts (1) from the steering column to instrument panel.
14. Remove the steering column.
15. Remove the intermediate shaft upper pinch bolt.
16. Remove the intermediate shaft from the steering column.

Installation Procedure





1. Install the intermediate shaft to the steering column.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

2. Install the intermediate shaft upper pinch bolt.
- Tighten the intermediate shaft upper pinch bolt to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).
3. Install the steering column to the vehicle.
4. Install the steering column mounting nuts (1) from the steering column to instrument panel.
- Tighten the steering column mounting nuts to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.).
5. Connect the steering column electrical connectors.





6. Install the transmission shift cable (2) to the steering column bracket.





7. Install the clip into the tabs of the transmission shift cable.





8. Install the transmission shift cable to the linear shift assembly.
9. Install the knee bolster (1). Refer to Knee Bolster Replacement - Left in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Warning Indicators.
10. Install the steering wheel. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement.
11. Raise the vehicle.





12. Install the intermediate shaft to the power steering gear.
13. Install the intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt.
- Tighten the intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).
14. Lower the vehicle.





15. Remove the J 42640 from the steering column.
16. Enable the SIR system. Refer to Enabling the SIR System in Restraint Systems.
