Intermediate Steering Shaft

- J 42640 Steering Column Lock Pin

Removal Procedure

Notice: The wheels of the vehicle must be straight ahead and the steering column in the LOCK position before disconnecting the steering column or intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Failure to do so will cause the SIR coil assembly to become un-centered, which may cause damage to the coil assembly.





1. Install J 42640 into the lower steering column trim cover access hole in order to lock the steering column.
2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
3. Reposition the intermediate shaft seal to gain access to the lower intermediate shaft pinch bolt.
4. Remove the intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt.
5. Disconnect the intermediate shaft from the power steering gear
6. Lower the vehicle.
7. Remove the knee bolster. Refer to Knee Bolster Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Warning Indicators.





8. Reposition the intermediate shaft seal in order to gain access to the upper intermediate shaft pinch bolt (2).
9. Remove the intermediate shaft upper pinch bolt (2).
10. Disconnect the intermediate shaft (1) from the steering column.
11. Remove the intermediate steering shaft from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure





1. Install the intermediate shaft (1) to the vehicle.
2. Connect the intermediate shaft to the steering column.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

3. Install the intermediate shaft upper pinch bolt (2).
Tighten the intermediate shaft upper pinch bolt to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).
4. Install the knee bolster. Refer to Knee Bolster Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Warning Indicators.
5. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
6. Connect the intermediate shaft to the power steering gear.
7. Install the intermediate steering shaft lower pinch bolt.
Tighten the intermediate steering shaft lower pinch bolt to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).
8. Lower the vehicle.





9. Remove J 42640 from the steering column.
