Steering Column Replacement (Floor Shift)

^ Tools Required
- J 42640 Steering Column Antirotation Pin

Removal Procedure

Caution: Refer to SIR Caution in Service Precautions.





1. Disable the SIR system.
2. Insert the J42640 into the steering column access hole in order to lock the steering column.





3. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
4. Remove the intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt.
5. Remove the intermediate shaft from the power steering gear.
6. Remove the knee bolster (1).
7. Remove the steering wheel.
8. Disconnect the steering column electrical connectors.
9. Lower the vehicle.





Important: Stabilize the studs in order to remove the nuts securing the steering column to the instrument panel.

10. Support the steering column.





11. Remove the steering column mounting nuts (1) from the steering column to instrument panel.
12. Remove the steering column.
13. Remove the intermediate shaft upper pinch bolt.
14. Remove the intermediate shaft from the steering column.

Installation Procedure





1. Install the intermediate shaft to the steering column.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

2. Install the intermediate shaft upper pinch bolt.
^ Tighten the intermediate shaft upper pinch bolt to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).
3. Install the steering column to the vehicle.
4. Install the steering column mounting nuts (1) from the steering column to instrument panel.
^ Tighten the steering column mounting nuts to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.).
5. Connect the steering column electrical connectors.
6. If equipped install the transmission shift cable.
7. Install the steering wheel.
8. Install the knee bolster (1).
9. Raise the vehicle.





10. Install the intermediate shaft to the power steering gear.
11. Install the intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt.
^ Tighten the intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).
12. Lower the vehicle.





13. Remove the J 42640 from the steering column.
14. Enable the SIR system.
