Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing & Jacket - Disassemble

Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle
1. Remove the steering column housing assembly.





2. Remove the ignition switch assembly.
3. Remove and dispose of the lower spring retainer (1).
4. Remove the seal retaining bushing (2).





5. If there is no sensor present, remove the steering shaft seal (1).





6. Perform the following steps if the hi resolution steering wheel position sensor is present:
6.1. Remove the steering shaft seal (4).
6.2. Remove the retainer sensor (3).
6.3. Remove the hi resolution steering wheel position sensor (2).
6.4. Remove the sensor adapter (1).





7. Remove the lower spring retainer (1).
8. Remove the lower bearing spring (2).
9. Remove the lower bearing seat (3).





10. If there is no sensor present, remove the bearing retainer (1).





11. Remove the 2 hexagon washer head tapping screws (2).
12. Remove the adapter and bearing assembly (1).





13. Remove the steering shaft assembly.

Important: Mark the race and upper shaft assembly and the lower steering shaft assembly to ensure proper assembly. Failure to assemble properly will cause the steering wheel to be turned 180 degrees.





14. Tilt the race and upper shaft assembly 90 degrees to the steering shaft assembly and disengage. If necessary, remove and discard the old centering sphere and spring.





15. Remove the 4 hexagon washer head tapping screws (1).
16. Remove the steering column housing support assembly (3) with the dimmer switch rod (2) still connected.
