Multifunction, Turn Signal, and Hazard Switch Replacement - On Vehicle

- J 23653-SIR Steering Column Lock Plate Compressor

Removal Procedure

Caution: Refer to Service Precautions.

1. Disable the SIR system.
2. Remove the inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil.





3. Remove the hazard knob mounting bolt (5) and hazard knob (2) from the steering column.
4. Remove the wave washer from the upper steering shaft.
5. Install J23653-SIR to the upper steering shaft and depress the shaft lock.





6. Remove the bearing retainer (1) from the upper steering shaft.
7. Remove J 23653-SIR from the steering shaft.





8. Remove the shaft lock (1).
9. Remove the turn signal cancel cam assembly (2).
10. Remove the upper bearing spring (3).
11. Unscrew and remove the tilt lever handle.
12. Remove the turn signal switch lever.





13. Remove the flat head tapping screw (3).
14. Remove the round washer head screw (2).
15. Remove the signal switch arm assembly.
16. Remove the pan head screws (1).
17. Disconnect the turn signal switch assembly from the bulk head connector.





18. Attach a wire to the turn signal switch assembly connector. This will help to make the installation easier.
19. Remove the turn signal switch assembly.
20. Pull the turn signal switch assembly connector through the column.

Installation Procedure





1. Attach a wire to the turn signal switch wiring connector.
2. Feed the turn signal switch assembly through the column.
3. Connect the turn signal switch assembly connector to the bulk head connector.
4. Install the turn signal switch assembly on to the upper shaft assembly.

Notice: Refer to fastener Notice in Service Precautions.





5. Install the pan head screws (1).
Tighten the pan head screws (1) to 9 Nm (80 inch lbs.).
6. Lubricate the signal switch arm assembly (4) with synthetic grease.
7. Install the signal switch arm assembly (4).
8. Install the flat head tapping screw (3).
Tighten the flat head tapping screw (3) to 2 Nm (20 inch lbs.).
9. Install the round washer head screw (2).
Tighten the round washer head screw (2) to 4 Nm (31 inch lbs.).
10. Install the turn signal switch lever.
11. Install the tilt lever handle.





12. Install the upper bearing spring (3).
13. Install the turn signal cam assembly (2).
14. Install the shaft lock to the upper steering shaft (1).
15. Install the bearing retainer on to the upper steering shaft.
16. Install J23653-SIR to upper steering shaft and depress shaft lock.
17. Install the bearing retainer to the upper steering shaft groove.
18. Remove J23653-SM from the upper steering shaft.





19. Install the hazard knob and hazard knob mounting screw (5) to the steering column.
Tighten the hazard knob mounting screw to 2 Nm (20 inch lbs.).
20. Install the inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil.
21. Enable the SIR system.
