"Service Stability System" Message Appears on Driver Information Center (DIC), DTC C1286 Set (Reprogram Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM))
Models:
2003 Cadillac CTS with RPO JL4
Built Prior To VIN Breakpoint 301130803080
Condition
Some customers may comment about the appearance of the "Service Stability System" message on the Driver Information Center (DIC) after operating the vehicle in Reverse (R) and then shifting it into Drive (D). Customers may also comment that the Stabilitrak -- Vehicle Stability Enhancement System (VSES) is not functioning properly.
The technician may find any of the following conditions:
^ Current or history DTC C1286 set.
^ VSES turned off.
^ Antilock Brake System (ABS) and Traction Control System (TCS) functions properly.
Cause
This condition may be due to a unique software issue within the Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM) that causes the display of the "Service Stability System" message and sets a false diagnostic trouble code.
Correction
A new service calibration is now available for reprogramming the EBCM.
Important:
Prior to performing the reprogramming procedure, review the following:
^ Service Programming System (SPS) Notice, SI # 823104 (Preface-Cautions & Notices-Introduction).

1. Install a scan tool and perform the ABS Diagnostic System Check. Refer to SI # 761387 (Brakes-Antilock Brake System-Diagnostic Information & Procedures).
^ If the scan tool displays DTC C1286, go to Step 2.

2. Reprogram the EBCM using the Service Programming System (SPS) Remote Procedure. Refer to SI # 820913 (Vehicle Control Systems-Programming-Repair Instructions).
