Oil Canning/Popping Type Noise From Rear Compartment/Trunk Area
(Install Sound Deadening Material)

Condition

Some customers may comment that an oil canning/popping type noise can be heard coming from the rear compartment/trunk area.

Cause

This condition may be due to the spare tire metal tub.

Correction

Remove the spare tire and install sound deadening material.

Procedure





1. Remove the spare tire and foam insert.

2. Install four 7.62 cm x 15.24 cm (3 in x 6 in) sound deadening material patches, such as 3M(R) Silencer Strips, P/N 08585, or equivalent, to the spare tire metal tub.

^ The number of patches required may vary from vehicle to vehicle.

^ Ensure the sizes and number of patches used are installed evenly around the spare tire tub.

3. Install the foam insert, spare tire and tools.
