Rear Axle - Assemble

^ J5590 Pinion Bearing Race Installer-Rear
^ J42170 Getrag Axle Bearing Race Installer
^ J44809 Output Shaft Seal Installer
^ J45007 Bushing Remover/Installer





1. Install the differential housing mount into the housing with the J45007.
2. Support the housing in a press in the axle seal area.





3. Using the J5590 (2) and the J42170 (1) install the shim (4) and the race (3) into the differential housing.





4. Using the J44809 install the axle oil seal into the housing.





5. Install the selected shims or marked shims (2) on the pinion housing assembly (1) and the O-ring (3).
6. Apply a light coat of oil to the pinion housing assembly (1) and the O-ring (3).
7. Align the bolt holes.
8. Install the pinion housing assembly (1) into the differential housing.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.





9. Install the 6 pinion assembly bolts.
Tighten the 6 pinion assembly bolts in a cries-cross pattern to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).





10. Install the differential carrier (2) into the housing (1).





11. Using the J5590 (2), the J42170 (1) and a press, install the shim (4) and bearing race (3) into the differential side cover.





12. Using the J44809, install the axle oil seal into the differential side cover.





13. Install the housing cover O-ring (2) into the groove on the housing cover (3).
14. Apply a light coat of oil to the housing cover O-ring (2), install the housing cover (3) onto the housing (1).
15. Install the 9 side cover bolts (4).
Tighten the 9 side cover bolts in a cries-cross pattern to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).





16. Install the drain plug into the drain hole.
Tighten the drain plug to 39 Nm (29 ft. lbs.).

Important: Fill the axle with axle lube in the vehicle.





17. Install the fill plug (1) into the fill hole.
Tighten the fill plug to 39 Nm (29 ft. lbs.).
