Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement - Center^ Tools Required

Removal Procedure
1. Notice: The front wheels of the vehicle must be maintained in the straight ahead position and the steering column must be in the LOCK position before disconnecting the steering column or intermediate shaft. Failure to follow these procedures will cause improper alignment of some components during installation and result in damage to the SIR coil assembly.
Turn the steering wheel so that the front wheels are pointing straight ahead.
2. Turn the ignition lock cylinder to the lock position and remove the key.
3. Install the J 42640 through the access hole in the lower steering column trim cover in order to lock the steering column.
4. Raise and support the vehicle.
5. Remove the upper to center intermediate shaft retaining bolt.
6. Remove the lower intermediate shaft to the power steering gear retaining bolt.
7. Disconnect the lower intermediate shaft from the power steering gear.
8. Important: Note the relationship of the center intermediate shaft to upper intermediate shaft in order to ensure proper installation.
Disconnect the center intermediate shaft from the upper intermediate shaft
9. Remove the center intermediate shaft with the lower intermediate shaft attached.
10. Remove the lower to center intermediate shaft retaining bolt.
11. Important: Note the relationship of the center intermediate shaft to lower intermediate shaft in order to ensure proper installation.
Remove the center intermediate shaft from the lower intermediate shaft.
Installation Procedure
1. Install the lower intermediate shaft to the upper intermediate shaft.
2. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
Install the lower to center intermediate shaft retaining bolt.
Tighten the bolt to 30 Nm (23 ft. lbs.).
3. Important: Ensure the orientation of the intermediate shafts as noted during removal.
Connect the center intermediate shaft to the upper intermediate shaft.
4. Install the center to upper intermediate shaft retaining bolt.
Tighten the bolt to 30 Nm (23 ft. lbs.).
5. Connect the lower intermediate shaft to the power steering gear.
6. Install the lower intermediate shaft to power steering gear retaining bolt.
Tighten the bolt to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.).
7. Lower the vehicle.
8. Remove J 42640 from the steering column lower trim cover access hole.
