Rack and Pinion Boot Replacement - On Vehicle

^ Tools Required
- J 22610 Keystone Clamp Plier
- J 42640 Steering Column Anti-Rotation Pin

Removal Procedure





1. Install J 42640 to the steering column.
2. Raise and support the vehicle.
3. Remove the tire and wheel.






4. Caution: Failure to disconnect the intermediate shaft from the rack and pinion stub shaft can result in damage to the steering gear and/or intermediate shaft. This damage can cause loss of steering control which could result in personal injury.

Notice: The wheels of the vehicle must be straight ahead and the steering column in the LOCK position before disconnecting the steering column or intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Failure to do so will cause the coil assembly in the steering column to become uncentered which will cause damage to the coil assembly.

Remove the intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt.
5. Disconnect the intermediate shaft from the power steering gear.
6. Remove the outer tie rod.





7. Remove the power steering gear retaining bolts.
8. Carefully position the power steering gear for access to the power steering gear dust boot.





9. Remove the jam nut from the inner tie rod.





10. Remove the rack and pinion boot outer clamp.





11. Remove the rack and pinion boot inner clamp.
12. Remove the rack and pinion boot (2).

Installation Procedure





1. Install the rack and pinion boot (2).
2. Install a new rack and pinion boot inner clamp (1).
3. Using J 22610 crimp the rack and pinion boot clamp.





4. Install the rack and pinion boot outer clamp.





5. Install the jam nut to the inner tie rod.





6. Position the power steering gear.

7. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

Install the power steering gear retaining bolts.

Tighten the bolts to 95 Nm (70 ft. lbs.).
8. Install the outer tie rod.





9. Connect the intermediate shaft to the power steering gear.
10. Install the intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt.

Tighten the bolt to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.).
11. Install the tire and wheel.
12. Lower the vehicle.





13. Remove the J 42640 from the steering column.
14. Adjust the front toe.
