During the shipment of a service clutch assembly, it is possible for the pressure plate wear indicator adjuster to shift from the "new" position. If the clutch adjusting ring steps are not adjusted fully out, improper clutch operation may result. The clutch may not release completely or may bind when pedal pressure is applied causing the hydraulic line to blow off.
Dealer technicians need to be reminded that a thorough inspection of a service clutch is necessary prior to installation. The wear indicator needs to be in the "new" position with the adjusting ring steps fully out.
If a readjustment is required, it must be accomplished Off-Vehicle by mounting the pressure plate in a press.
For Corvette models, this procedure can also be accomplished On-Vehicle (with the aid of an assistant) by removing the flywheel inspection cover.
Important:
The correct torque specification for the six clutch pressure plate to flywheel bolts is 70 N.m (51 lb ft).
