Power Steering - Cold Start Squawk/Squeal Noise

Bulletin No.: 04-02-32-002

Date: March 01, 2004

TECHNICAL

Subject:
Power Steering Cold Start Squawk/Squeal Type Noise When Outside Temperature Below -24°C (-12°F) (Replace Power Steering Fluid)

Models:
2004 Cadillac CTS, CTS-V
with 3.6L or 5.7L Engine (VINS 7, S - RPOs LY7, LS6)

Condition

Important:
This condition, which is related to power steering fluid viscosity, should not be confused with conditions having similar symptoms such as those described in the Symptom List in the Power Steering System sub-section of the Service Manual.

Some customers may comment on hearing a squawk/squeal type noise coming from the engine compartment and occurring when the outside ambient temperatures are very low (approximately -24°C (-12°F) and lower).

Cause

This condition may be due to the low ambient temperatures causing the power steering fluid to thicken in the same manner as any other petroleum-based oil or fluid. Upon cold starting, the fluid resists movement and does not circulate through the power steering pump as easily as it does after warming and thinning to its normal operating viscosity.

Correction

1. Flush the old fluid from the power steering system.

2. Fill the power steering system with new Cold Climate Power Steering Fluid.

3. Bleed the power steering system to remove any trapped air.
