Extension Housing Installation (5L50-E/5L50-E AWD Including XLR)

Tools Required
^ J5590 Pinion Bearing Race Installer-Rear
^ J7079-2 Universal Driver Handle
^ J44762 Bearing Installer
^ J45131-2 Bearing Remover
^ J45131-1 Bearing Installer
^ J46741 Seal Installer





1. Inspect both inner and outer output shaft bearings for the following:
^ Damaged cage
^ Roller pitted

2. Use J5590 to remove the outer output shaft bearing if it is damaged.





3. Using J44762 press the outer output shaft bearing (28) with numbers on bearing facing up.





4. Rotate the transmission 90 degrees.
5. Measure from the bottom to the face of the bearing. Record this as dimension B.





6. install the extension housing gasket (25) onto the extension housing (27).
7. Install the extension housing (27) onto the case.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

8. Install the extension housing bolts (35).
Tighten the extension housing bolts to 22 Nm (16 ft. lbs.).





Important: Install the seal onto the tool before installing into the case to prevent damage to the seal.

9. Using J44765 install the prop shaft flange seal (29) - 5L40-E/5L50-E AWD.





10. Using J46741 install the prop shaft flange seal (68) - XLR only.
