Cylinder Head Replacement - Right Side

Removal Procedure






1. Remove the valve rocker arms and pushrods. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement Service and Repair.
2. Remove the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement Service and Repair.
3. Remove the engine coolant air bleed pipe and covers. Refer to Coolant Air Bleed Pipe Assembly Replacement Service and Repair.
4. Remove the exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement - Right Side Service and Repair.
5. Remove the oil level indicator tube.
6. Remove the negative battery cable from the right cylinder head.






Important: The cylinder head bolts are of a torque-to-yield design and are NOT to be used again. Install NEW cylinder head bolts during assembly.

7. Remove the M8 and M11 cylinder head bolts (220, 221).

Notice: After removal, place the cylinder head on 2 wood blocks in order to prevent damage to the sealing surfaces.

8. Remove the cylinder head (218). Refer to Cylinder Head Removal - Right Side Overhaul.






9. Remove the cylinder head gasket (217).
10. Discard the gasket.
11. Discard the cylinder head bolts.
12. Disassemble the cylinder head if necessary. Refer to Cylinder Head Disassemble Overhaul.
13. Clean and inspect the cylinder head. Refer to Cylinder Head Cleaning and Inspection Overhaul.
14. Assemble the cylinder head if necessary. Refer to Cylinder Head Assemble Overhaul.

Installation Procedure






1. Install the right cylinder head. Refer to Cylinder Head Installation - Right Side Overhaul.
2. Install the negative battery cable to the right cylinder head.






3. Install the oil level indicator tube.
4. Install the exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement - Right Side Service and Repair.
5. Install the engine coolant air bleed pipe. Refer to Coolant Air Bleed Pipe Assembly Replacement Service and Repair.
6. Install the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement Service and Repair.
7. Install the valve rocker arms and pushrods. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement Service and Repair.
