Date: July 13, 2006

TECHNICAL

Subject:
Rattle Noise from Shift Knob Area/Loose Shift Knob (Remove Shift Knob, Apply Sealant and Retighten Retaining Screw)

Models:
2006 Cadillac CTS

with Automatic Transmission (RPO M82)

Built Prior to May 1, 2006

Condition

Some customers may comment about a rattle noise coming from the shifter area. The customer may also notice that the shift knob is loose.

Cause

The shift knob has a retaining screw at the base facing rearward. This screw can loosen with use and create a rattle condition. Re-tightening the screw or replacing the knob or shifter will not permanently resolve the condition.

Correction

1. Remove the shift knob retaining screw.

2. Apply 242 Blue Threadlocker (medium grade) P/N 12345382 (in Canada, P/N 10953489) to the retaining screw.

3. Install the shift knob retaining screw.

Tighten

Tighten the screw to 2.5 N.m (22 lb in).
