Bulletin No.: 05-08-64-028

Date: September 21, 2005

TECHNICAL

Subject:
Jerky, Slow, or Inoperative Outside Rear View Mirrors (Remove Casting Flash from Glass Stabilizers)

Models:
2005-2006 Cadillac STS

Built Between and Including VIN Breakpoints 50225000 - 60122204

Condition

Some customers may comment that the outside rear view mirrors (side view mirrors) jump, move in a jerky or slow manner, or are inoperative.

Cause

This condition may be caused by casting flash remaining on the two upper glass stabilizers rubbing or binding against the mirror housing (shell).

Correction

Remove the casting flash with an abrasive instrument using the following procedure:

Note:
Do not allow any abrasive surface to come in contact with painted areas of the mirror housing or the reflective surface of the mirror. Sandpaper or other abrasives may damage the paint finish or scratch reflective surfaces.

1. Bond a piece of 220 grit sand paper to only one side of a plastic putty knife.

^ As an alternative, an emery board with one side covered with tape may also be used for this repair.

^ Another alternative is to fold a piece of sandpaper into three layers (accordion-style) so that one side is smooth.

2. Rotate the mirror glass down, to provide access to the glass stabilizers located at the top of the mirror glass.

3. Insert the sanding tool between the mirror shell and the glass stabilizer to remove the sharp edge on the stabilizer.

Remove the sharp edge on both stabilizers.

4. Test by actuating the mirror from the switch and watch for jerky or slow movement.

5. Repeat Steps 2 and 3 if the condition persists.
