Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement - Center

Tools Required

J 42640 Steering Column Anti-Rotation Pin

Removal Procedure





Notice: The front wheels of the vehicle must be maintained in the straight ahead position and the steering column must be in the LOCK position before disconnecting the steering column or intermediate shaft. Failure to follow these procedures will cause improper alignment of some components during installation and result in damage to the SIR coil assembly.

1. Turn the steering wheel so that the front wheels are pointing straight ahead.
2. Turn the ignition lock cylinder to the LOCK position and remove the key.
3. Install the J 42640 through the access hole in the lower steering column trim cover in order to lock the steering column.
4. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.




5. Remove the upper intermediate steering shaft to center intermediate steering shaft bolt.




6. Remove the lower intermediate steering shaft to the power steering gear bolt.
7. Remove the lower intermediate steering shaft from the power steering gear.

Important: Note the relationship of the center intermediate shaft to upper intermediate shaft in order to ensure proper installation.

8. Remove the center intermediate steering shaft from the upper intermediate steering shaft.
9. Remove the center intermediate steering shaft and the lower intermediate shaft from the vehicle as an assembly.
10. Place the center intermediate shaft and lower intermediate shaft assembly on a workbench.




11. Remove the lower intermediate steering shaft to center intermediate shaft bolt.

Important: Note the relationship of the center intermediate shaft to lower intermediate shaft in order to ensure proper installation.

12. Remove the center intermediate steering shaft from the lower intermediate steering shaft.

Installation Procedure




1. Install the lower intermediate steering shaft to the center intermediate steering shaft.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice.

2. Install the lower intermediate steering shaft to center intermediate steering shaft bolt.

Tighten the bolt to 30 N.m (23 lb ft).





Important: Ensure the orientation of the intermediate shafts as noted during removal.

3. Install the center intermediate steering shaft to the upper intermediate steering shaft.
4. Install the center intermediate steering shaft to upper intermediate steering shaft bolt.

Tighten the bolt to 30 N.m (23 lb ft).




5. Install the lower intermediate steering shaft to the power steering gear.
6. Install the lower intermediate steering shaft to power steering gear bolt.

Tighten the bolt to 50 N.m (37 lb ft).

7. Lower the vehicle.




8. Remove the J 42640 from the steering column lower trim cover access hole.
