Transmission Case and Adapter Assemble

Transmission Case

Tools Required

* J 36190 Drive Handle
* J 39435 Mainshaft and Countershaft Bearing Race Installer
* J 39439-4 Bushing Installer
* J 39439-3 Bushing Installer




1. Install the 1st/2nd and the 3rd/4th shift shaft bushings. Use the J 36190, the J 39439-4, and the J 39439-3.




2. Install the mainshaft bearing race, using the J 8092 and the J 39435.




3. Install the countershaft bearing race, using the J 8092 and the J 39435.




4. Install the dowel pins.




5. Apply sealant GM P/N 12346004, (Canadian P/N 10953480) or equivalent to the threads of the backup switch.





Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

6. Install the backup switch.

Tighten the switch to 27 N.m (20 lb ft).




7. Apply sealant GM P/N 12346004, (Canadian P/N 10953480) or equivalent to the transmission case fill plug threads (1) or (2).




8. Install the transmission case fill plug.

Tighten the oil fill plug to 18 N.m (13 lb ft).

9. Install the temperature switch (1) (M12 only).

Tighten the switch to 41 N.m (30 lb ft).





Notice: The H-pattern on the guide plate must face the extension housing. If the guide plate is installed incorrectly, then damage will occur.

10. Install the guide plate and the guide plate bolts.

Tighten the bolts to 22 N.m (16 lb. ft).

Adapter Plate

Tools Required

* J 39433 Input Shaft Seal Installer
* J 39439-1 Bushing Remover/lnstall




1. Install the dowel pins.




2. Install the 1st/2nd, 3rd/4th speed shift shaft bushing, using the J 39439-1.




3. Install the reverse rail bushing, using the J 39439-1.




4. Install the input shaft seal, using the J 39433.
5. Install the input shaft seal and the upper seal on the other side of the adapter plate, using the J 39433.




6. Install adapter plate plug.




7. Install countershaft bearing shim and bearing race.




8. Install input shaft bearing shim and bearing race.
