Steering Column Replacement (Floor Shift with Power Tilt)

Steering Column Replacement (Floor Shift with Power Tilt)

Tools Required
* J 42640 Steering Column Anti-rotation Pin
* J 41352 Modular Column Holding Fixture

Removal Procedure

Caution: Refer to SIR Caution.

Notice: The wheels of the vehicle must be straight ahead and the steering column in the LOCK position before disconnecting the steering column or intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Failure to do so will cause the SIR coil assembly to become uncentered, which may cause damage to the coil assembly.

Notice: Once the steering column is removed from the car, the column is extremely susceptible to damage. Dropping the column on its end could collapse the steering shaft or loosen the plastic injections which maintain column rigidity. Leaning on the column could cause the jacket to bend or deform. Any of the above damage could impair the column's collapsible design. If it is necessary to remove the steering wheel, use only the specified steering wheel puller. Under no conditions should the end of the shaft be hammered upon as hammering could loosen plastic injections which maintain column rigidity.

1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling.
2. Insert J 42640 into the steering column access hole in order to lock the steering column.
3. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to vehicle Lifting.

4. Remove the intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt.
5. Remove the intermediate shaft from the power steering gear.
6. Lower the vehicle.
7. Remove the knee bolster.
8. Remove the steering wheel.
9. Disconnect the steering column electrical connectors.
10. Remove the steering column trim covers from the column.

11. Support the steering column.
12. Remove the steering column nuts (1) from the steering column.
13. Remove the steering column and intermediate shaft (2) from the vehicle.
14. Remove the intermediate shaft from the steering column.

Installation Procedure

Notice: If a service replacement steering column is being installed, do not remove the anti-rotation pin until after the steering column has been connected to the steering gear. Removing the anti-rotation pin before the steering column is connected to the steering gear may damage the SIR coil assembly.

1. Install the replacement steering column to the J 41352.
2. Transfer the necessary components from the old steering column to the new column.
3. Remove the steering column from the J 41352.

4. Install the intermediate shaft to the steering column.
5. Position the steering column to the mounting studs while routing the intermediate shaft through the dash panel.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice.

6. Install the steering column nuts (1) to the steering column.

Tighten the nuts to 27 N.m (20 lb ft).

7. Connect the steering column electrical connectors.
8. Install the steering column trim cover to the column.
9. Install the steering wheel.
10. Install the knee bolster.
11. Raise the vehicle.

12. Install the intermediate shaft to the power steering gear.
13. Install the lower pinch bolt to the intermediate shaft.

Tighten the bolt to 47 N.m (35 lb ft).

14. Lower the vehicle.
15. Remove J 42640 from the steering column.
16. Enable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling.
