Condition

Some customers may comment that the center console ashtray door will not work properly, binds or is loose.

Cause

This condition may be caused by movement of the ashtray door mechanism, which may allow the spring retainer (1) to become slightly outboard of the retainer link (2). This positioning most commonly leads to the retainer not having full contact with the link's triangular stand-off (circled above), causing the tip of the stand-off to become sheared off/broken.

Correction

The ashtray components are available separately from the center console ashtray assembly. Technicians are to replace the ashtray mechanism components following the steps below:
Components: Ashtray Door Pop-up Spring, Retainer Link and Pop-up Spring Retainer

1. Remove the front floor console front ashtray. Refer to Front Floor Console Front Ashtray Replacement in SI.

2. Open the ashtray door (1) so the mechanism is in the position shown above.

3. As shown in the graphic above, use a screwdriver, or suitable tool, to remove the spring retainer assembly (1) from the ashtray housing.

Note
When the retainer assembly (1) is removed, the pop-up spring (2) will be attached.

4. Remove the spring from the retainer and visually inspect both parts for any damage. Reinstall or replace the retainer and/or spring as necessary.

5. Using the same tool from Step 3 above, remove the retainer link (1) from the ashtray housing:

1. Use the tool to lift the narrow end of the link high enough to clear the ramped standing rib on the housing.
2. Rotate the link clockwise to align the underside tab with the slot in the housing.
3. If necessary, use the tool to disengage the link from the slot and remove the link from the housing.

6. Starting the reassembly, install the new link to the ashtray housing:

1. Insert the underside tab into the slot in the housing, and press the link until it snaps onto the housing.

2. Once installed, rotate the link counterclockwise so it rides up the ramped rib and drops into position between the two ribs (1) on the housing. The link will now be retained by the underside tab.

7. Install the pop-up spring to the spring retainer:

1. Install the inner end of the spring into the slot at the center of the retainer and hold in position with your thumb, as shown above.

2. Using your other hand, pull and rotate the outer end of the spring counter-clockwise toward the single standing rib on the retainer. This will decrease the coil size and set spring tension.

3. Hook the outer end of the spring (1) around the standing rib (2), then allow the spring to flex and seat into position.

Important
Ensure the ashtray door is in the open position when installing the retainer assembly.

8. Position the retainer assembly to the opening in the ashtray housing and hook the outer spring end (1) over the standing rib (2) on the housing.

9. Use your thumb to hold the components in place until the clamp can be positioned.

Tip
You will here an audible click when the retainer assembly fully engages and snaps into the housing.
10. As shown above, use a clamp to fully seat the retainer assembly into the ashtray housing.
11. Ensure that the ashtray door is properly opening/closing and that the mechanism is traveling freely.
12. Install the front floor console front ashtray. Refer to Front Floor Console Front Ashtray Replacement in SI.
