Date: August 28, 2006

TECHNICAL

Subject:
Muffler Assemblies, Tailpipes, Exhaust Tips Do Not Appear Centered in Rear Fascia Cut Outs (Install Retaining Fasteners and Washers)

Models:
2004-2007 Cadillac SRX, STS

Condition

Some customers may comment that the muffler assemblies, tailpipes or exhaust tips do not appear centered in the rear fascia cut outs.

Cause

The muffler hanger rod may move inside the rubber isolator mounts causing incorrect positioning of the exhaust pipes.

Correction

Install washers and retaining fasteners over the muffler hanger rods at the front and rear positions of the muffler assembly.

Raise and support the vehicle in order to gain access to the exhaust system hangers, the muffler assemblies and any exhaust rods that do have a retaining fastener.

Remove the left retainer nut from the left front muffler hanger, if present.

Install the washer (1) and a new retainer fastener (2) to the left front muffler hanger, leaving a 5 mm (0.20 in) gap measured from the flat rod end to the retainer.

Remove the left rear retainer nuts from the muffler hangers, if present.

Install the left rear washers and the new retainer fasteners while aligning the muffler to the cut out in the rear fascia exit.

Remove the right retainer nut from the right front muffler hanger, if present.

Install the washer and a new retainer fastener to right front muffler hanger, leaving a 5 mm (0.20 in) gap measured from the flat rod end to the retainer.

Remove the right rear retainer nuts from the muffler hangers, if present.

Install the right rear washers and the new retainer fasteners while aligning the muffler to the cut out in the rear fascia exit.

Lower the vehicle and visually inspect the exhaust tips to ensure proper alignment.
