Subject: Keyless Access System Will Not Passively Unlock Door (Replace Outside Door Handle Lever)
Models:
2007-2008 Cadillac SLS, STS
Condition
Some customers may comment that the keyless access system will not passively unlock the vehicle door(s).
Cause
The front outside door handle lever contains an antenna that receives a signal from the key fob. As the driver approaches the vehicle, this signal unlocks the vehicle using the keyless access system. Moisture may penetrate the outside door handle lever and allow the antenna windings to corrode and fail to transmit the signal to the system.
Correction
If SI diagnostic procedures lead to a failed communication from the handle-mounted antenna, use the following steps to install a new outside door handle lever assembly and revise the sealing of the new handle. These service handle assemblies are primed and need to be painted to match.
1. Remove the affected front side door outside handle. Refer to Front Side Door Outside Handle Replacement in SI.
2. After the new service handle is painted, but before installation on the vehicle, perform the following steps to seal out moisture.
1. Prepare two 12 mm (1/2 in) X 80 mm (3-1/4 in) pieces of 3M #9325 Squeak Reduction Tape*, or equivalent.
2. Install the first piece of tape as shown. Ensure that the tape covers the vertical wall of the area as shown.
3. Install the second piece of tape as shown. Ensure that the tape covers the vertical wall of the area as shown.
4. Use a trim stick or similar tool to seal the tape into the creased area of the handle.
5. Trim any excess tape from the end of the handle to allow the chrome insert to engage with the handle.
3. Install the front side door outside handle. Refer to Front Side Door Outside Handle Replacement in SI.
It may be necessary to replace the chrome insert if it was damaged when it was removed.
