Fuel Delivery and Air Induction: Service and Repair
Fuel System Cleaning
Caution: Refer to the Battery Disconnect Caution.
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Relieve the fuel system pressure. Refer to Fuel Pressure Relief (With CH 48027) Fuel Pressure Relief (Without CH 48027). Fuel Pressure Relief (With CH 48027) Fuel Pressure Relief (Without CH 48027)
3. Drain the fuel tanks. Refer to Fuel Tank Draining. Service and Repair
4. Remove the fuel tanks.
5. Remove the fuel tank modules.
6. Inspect the left fuel tank module.
7. Inspect the left fuel tank module fuel pump and fuel pump inlet for debris. Replace the left fuel tank module assembly if you find debris in the fuel pump inlet.
8. Inspect the right fuel tank module strainer. Replace the right fuel tank module assembly if you find a contaminated strainer. The right fuel tank module strainer is not serviced separately.
Important: When flushing the fuel tanks, handle the fuel and water mixture as a hazardous material. Handle the fuel and water mixture in accordance with all applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
9. Flush the fuel tanks with hot water.
10. Pour the water out of the fuel tank module assembly openings. Rock the tanks to be sure that removal of the water from the tanks is complete.
11. Install the fuel tank module assemblies to the fuel tanks.
12. Disconnect the fuel feed hose/pipe from the fuel rail.
13. Use compressed air in order to apply air pressure to the fuel lines in the opposite direction from the normal fuel flow.
14. Remove the fuel injectors and fuel rail.
15. Clean and inspect the fuel injectors and fuel rail.
16. Install the fuel injectors and fuel rail.
17. Connect the fuel feed hose/pipe to the fuel rail.
18. Install the fuel tanks.
19. Refill the fuel system.
20. Install the fuel filler cap.
21. Connect the negative battery cable.
22. Perform the following procedure in order to inspect for leaks:
1. Turn the ignition switch ON for 2 seconds.
2. Turn the ignition switch OFF for 10 seconds.
3. Turn the ignition switch ON.
4. Inspect for fuel leaks.
23. Program the transmitters. Refer to Transmitter Programming (Domestic and Japan) Transmitter Programming (Export Including Canada).
